Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2026: Aren’t we aware enough yet?
For many survivors and those who work in the field of sexual assault, April 1st marks the first day of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. But for everyone else…it's April Fools Day.
And in 2026, that feels fitting…in the most gross and tragic way.
The idea that what’s missing is awareness is wildly flawed.
Don't get us wrong. Awareness plays an important role in sparking meaningful shifts in how our society understands and responds to societal problems like sexual violence.
But awareness alone is not enough. Awareness doesn’t change the systems that protect perpetrators. It doesn’t provide safety or fuel justice for survivors. Awareness alone doesn’t generate new solutions or drive meaningful change...action does.
In the past year, survivors have faced one tidal wave after another…often being unable to catch their breath before the next hits. Horrific details of abuse by powerful and well-connected (sometimes beloved) serial perpetrators filling their newsfeeds – entertainers, politicians, and activists – all who have escaped meaningful accountability for decades. Responses to the headlines are a familiar chorus of shock, disbelief, and "If it really happened, then why didn’t they come forward sooner?" And these comments are not just from strangers online, but from those in our lives who should know better...who should be more "aware.”
Shifting from disgust, to numbness, to sheer, blinding rage…the truth is that most survivors are plenty aware - excruciatingly so.
And this month (and in ALL months) they deserve better.
They deserve protection. They deserve safe ways to come forward when, how, and IF they choose. They deserve to know if the person who harmed them has harmed others...without being forced to go public and face the ignorance, disbelief, and cruelty they see so many other survivors battle in both comment sections and courtrooms.
Survivors don’t owe us their stories. They don’t owe us more awareness. We owe it to them to fight for their safety and their ability to take back what was taken from them: control.
And that’s why this April we are leading the first national Day of Reckoning on 4/24...where survivors and those who love them can channel their anger into meaningful action. Whether that means entering your perpetrator into Callisto’s Matching System, spreading the word so more survivors know this secure technology exists, or donating to help ensure that more survivors will have access to the protection, support, and options they deserve, the Day of Reckoning is a chance for us all to stand together and do more than just ‘raise awareness.’
Together we can shine light into the darkness and ignite real change.
