Serial Sexual Assault on College Campuses

The issue of serial sexual assault on college campuses is a pervasive problem that demands our attention and action. Statistics reveal that an estimated 1 in 4 female students, 1 in 15 male students, and 1 in 5 transgender, nonbinary, or genderqueer students experience sexual assault during their college years. And, over 90% of these assaults are committed by serial perpetrators who offend an average of six times before they graduate.

Even with this high-rate of campus assaults, only 6% of student survivors report to TitleIX or the police. It is vital that victims have safe ways to process their trauma and explore their options. This also underscores a critical issue: serial perpetrators often evade consequences and go on to harm more victims, leaving a trail of pain and suffering in their wake.

The Culture of Silence

The prevalence of serial sexual assault is exacerbated by a culture of silence and shame that surrounds this issue. More than any other crime, victims of sexual violence are often blamed, dismissed, or discouraged from coming forward. This culture of silence perpetuates a cycle of impunity for perpetrators and injustice for survivors.

Furthermore, the data shows that only 0.25% of sexual assaults result in the arrest, felony conviction, and incarceration of the perpetrator. This not only speaks to the inadequacy of our current justice systems but also highlights the dire need for a shift in how we treat survivors.

It is clear that society is failing victims of sexual assault on college campuses.
